Three main milestones can be emphasized in the birth and growth of the communicational approach of cultural and media industries: the gathering of various fields into one cohesive system; the characterization of the socio-economical model, and the taxinomy of the different existing models.

The aim of this paper is to put forward the theoretical problems that are at stake in each case, the different answers to these problems and, finally, the heuristic interest of an historiographical reflection on the history of that communicational approach.
